- Vintage (Soon to be Antique) 1930's traditional Ukrainian embroidered dress
- Hand made in Ukraine with homespun natural, un-dyed heavy hemp linen, hand stitched, and embroidered on the sleeves.
- The Slavic folk art of embroidery carries many symbols and cultural codes from the ancient past ancestry of the Slavic peoples, long before Christianity. Many of which survived religious conversion and continue to be used today. Each embroidered blouse/dress called a Vyshyvanka tells a story "written" in this ancient folk art.
- This dress's embroidery was hand made with a lighter natural shade than the darker hemp it's on. It features the 8 pointed star (Mallows) a combining of masculine & feminine to create life. It is known as the Mother's Star, and symbolizes a protective energy field around a living being. After the introduction of Christianity, it became a symbol associated with the Virgin Mary. The diamond/lozenge shape represents fertility and the land or soil, and the combining of feminine and masculine (joined triangles). The squares are for harmony, peace, order, and represents Earth, and the number 4 for the four directions, four seasons, the four parts of the life cycle, and the 4 parts of the day.
- There are button loops on either side of the neckline, but no buttons. Can be worn open, or a button or tie could be easily added.
- Features incredible hand stitching and gathering details at the neckline and wrists
- Cut in the traditional loose and wide tunic style with deep neckline and large billowing sleeves. This dress features shorter 3/4 length sleeves. Traditionally it would be warn with a skirt over top, but is often worn belted as a dress in modern times.
- Size Small-Large depending on desired fit
- Measurements: shoulders are 21" across, chest/bust is 46" around, waist is 50" around, hip is 50" around, neck opening (with button loops closed) is 8" diameter, wrist cuff is 4" diameter, arm length is 22" long from neckline to cuff, length of dress from shoulder to bottom hem is 44" long
- In excellent vintage/antique condition! This piece is nearly impeccable, incredibly high quality craftswomanship, showing only small naturally occurring imperfections in the hand spun hemp.
