  • Vintage (almost antique) RARE 1930's Ukrainian linen dress with blue embroidery
  • Homemade in Ukraine with homespun linen and hand embroidered with a signature indigo blue pattern originating in the Klembivka Village in the Vinnitsya region of Ukraine.
  • The Slavic folk art of embroidery carries many symbols and cultural codes from the ancient past ancestry of Eastern European peoples, long before Christianity. Many of which survived religious conversion and continue to be used today. The cross on the chest symbolizes the Sun, Creator and masculinity. It is surrounded by a diamond (joining of female and male) with hooks/horns around it. Together, these symbolize fertility, known as "zhaba" (toad). The seed planted in the field. The zigzag wavy lines "chevrons" on the sleeves represent the feminine, water, and a woman's reproductive loins, where new life is created. The "X" cross symbolizes femininity and the moon and a strong talisman against evil spirits or bad energy. It also symbolizes harmony of the four elements, fire, earth, air and water.
  • This design has a fitted neckline featuring hand crocheted trim with blue detailing, embroidery on the chest, shoulders and wrist cuffs.
  • It is meant to be pulled on over the head.
  • Cut in the traditional loose and wide tunic style, but with straight cut sleeves and wide wrist openings. Traditionally it would be warn with a skirt over top, but is often worn belted as a dress in modern times.
  • Size Small-Large depending on desired fit
  • Measurements: shoulders are 21" across, chest/bust is 46" around, waist is 53" around, hip is 53" around, neck opening is 8" diameter, upper arm is 15" around, arm length is 16" long from shoulder seam to cuff, length of dress from shoulder to bottom hem is 45"" long
  • In very good vintage/antique condition! This piece shows some signs of its age when looked at in bright natural light. There is some very light discolouration (likely old water staining), a few very faded stains and some tiny faded green colour spots on the upper back, and a small hole that could be easily repaired. An old repair to a hole was done already with the addition of a piece of linen as a patch to inside of the left sleeve. Since this piece is made from natural fibres, a good sun bleaching may take care of the discolouring. Besides that, it still presents very well, is clean and ready to wear! Price reflects the imperfections.
  • A gorgeous piece of Slavic heritage made from homespun linen all the way from Ukraine. A wonderful heirloom piece, ready to wear, keep well and pass down through the ages! A true treasure from almost a century ago. This would make a beautiful and thoughtful piece for someone wishing to conceive, a Mother to be, or someone working the fertility of the land, or working to balance masculine and feminine in harmony.
