  • Vintage (Soon to be Antique) 1930's traditional Ukrainian embroidered dress
  • Hand made in Ukraine with homespun natural hemp linen, hand stitched, and embroidered with red poppy flowers, berries and black stems and leaves on the sleeves. Includes unique handmade lace on each arm featuring 8 petal flowers/stars, and leaf sprigs with berries and possibly grapes.
  • The Slavic folk art of embroidery carries many symbols and cultural codes from the ancient past, ancestry of the Slavic peoples, long before Christianity. Many of which survived religious conversion and continue to be used today. Flowers are a symbol of new life, spring, fertility and femininity and beauty. The poppy specifically is used to ward off the evil eye. Leaves and sprigs represent Mother, and berries are children. Grapes are a symbol or family happiness, and the 8 pointed/petalled flower/star a combining of masculine & feminine to create life. It is known as the Mother's Star, and symbolizes a protective energy field around a living being. My guess is that whomever spent many hours making this dress, imbued it with a lot of love and beautiful intentions.
  • There are button loops on either side of the neckline, but no buttons. Can be worn open, or a button or tie could be easily added.
  • Features incredible hand stitching and gathering details with red embroidery at each wrist.
  • Cut in the traditional loose and wide tunic style with deep neckline and large billowing sleeves. This is a shorter tunic style which could be worn as a blouse. Traditionally it would be warn with a skirt over top, but is often worn belted as a dress in modern times.
  • Size Small-2XLarge depending on desired fit
  • Measurements: shoulders are 21" across, chest/bust is 56" around, waist is 58" around, hip is 60" around, neck opening (with button loops closed) is 7" diameter, wrist cuff (with button done up) is 4" diameter, arm length is 27" long from neckline to cuff, length of dress from shoulder to bottom hem is 34" long
  • In excellent vintage/antique condition! This piece is nearly impeccable, with one small repair that was masterfully done at the waistline (shown in photos) and under the left armpit.
  • A gorgeous piece of Slavic heritage made from natural hemp fibre all the way from Eastern Europe. A wonderful heirloom piece, ready to wear, keep well and pass down through the ages! A true treasure from almost a century ago. This would make a beautiful and thoughtful gift for a Mother, or Mother to be.
